Quit Vaping Research

What’s the Purpose of the Study?

This is a University of Toronto study for understanding people’s experiences with quitting e-cigarette vaping. We’re interested in hearing from people who have quit vaping, tried or thought about quitting vaping in the past, or have plans to quit vaping in the future.

Who’s Needed?

Interested people must fit all three of the following criteria:

  1. Must be 16 to 29 years of age
  2. Must have experience in vaping e-cigarettes
  3. Must have interest or experience in quitting vaping e-cigarettes

What’s Involved?

  • Participation: 1 focus group discussion lasting 60 to 90 minutes
  • Location: Greater Toronto Area

If you are interested in taking part in a focus group discussion, please click this link that will take you to a short questionnaire that will only take 2 to 3 minutes to fill out.

If you agree to take part in the study, you will be invited to a focus group with 5-9 other people. During the focus group discussion, we’d like to hear your views about or experiences with vaping and quitting vaping. The group discussion will take place at a time and place that’s convenient for you and the rest of the group, and will be led by two researchers from the Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU). The discussion will be audio-recorded—this is helpful for us as it means we don’t have to take detailed notes during the discussion. If you agree to take part, you are free to change your mind at any time without having to give us a reason.

What are the Possible Benefits from Taking Part in the Study?

There will be no immediate benefits for you, but by taking in part in this study you can help us understand how people quit vaping and how we can best support them. To thank you for taking the time to talk to us, we would like to give you a $50 gift card.

Are There Any Risks in Taking Part in the Study?

No. There is no known risk if you take part in this study. However, it's possible you may feel uncomfortable with sharing your experiences or listening to others. Please remember that we understand and that we will never forcibly ask you to share if you don’t want to.

What Will Happen to Any Information I Give?

Any information we have about you and everything you say during the optional interview or the discussion will be kept confidential. We will ask you and others in the group not to talk to people outside the group about what was said during the discussion. However, we cannot stop or prevent participants who were in the group from sharing things that should be confidential. All electronic data will be stored on an encrypted computer. Any paper copies will be scanned then destroyed. All digital recordings will be destroyed after completion of the study.
