The Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU)
is an Ontario-based research network that is recognized as a Canadian
leader in tobacco control research, monitoring and evaluation, teaching
and training and as a respected source of science based information
on tobacco control.
Mandate
Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health in 1993, and later by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport as the research component of the Smoke-Free Ontario Strategy, OTRU's
mandate is to:
- Exercise leadership in the design and conduct of research projects
- Increase Ontario's capacity to conduct research, monitoring and evaluation
- Monitor programs and activities conducted under the auspices of the Ontario Tobacco Strategy
- Provide advice and technical expertise on program evaluation and best practices
- Analyze and disseminate science-based information for the research and public health communities
- Strengthen and broaden our provincial, national and international network of researchers, programmers and policymakers

of Toronto is our principal sponsor. Our co-sponsors include the Centre
for Addiction and Mental Health, and the University
of Waterloo. Our
sponsors provide in-kind contributions of investigator time, facilities, and
administrative support.
Network
A multidisciplinary team of seven university-based Principal
Investigators contributes to strategic direction of the unit, development
of the research agenda and workplan, and planning and review of OTRU products
and publications. Our Principal Investigators bring a wealth of expertise
and experience in tobacco control research.
This team is linked to our network of over 100 Investigators, Affiliates and Student
Members/Associates from universities and institutions in Ontario, across Canada and in other
countries. Staff in
Toronto and Waterloo coordinate OTRU's activities and carry out our research,
evaluation, training and dissemination projects.
