Download Update   Health Professionals' Advice on Smoking Cessation in Ontario: 2002-2007 (February)

Health professionals can and should play a key role in smoking cessation and evidence shows that many consider it their role to advise smokers to quit. Campaigns promoting health professionals' cessation advice have been in place in Ontario since 2002. This Update assesses Ontario smokers' receipt of advice and their likelihood of seeking smoking cessation advice from health professionals in 2007 compared to 2002.

A broad variety of cigarette brands are available to Ontario smokers. This update presents data on cigarette brand family preferences based on data from the first two waves of the cross-sectional component of OTRU's Ontario Tobacco Survey conducted in 2005 and 2006.

Download Update   Smokeless Tobacco and Snus: The Current Evidence for Health Risks (June)

Although smokeless tobacco has lower risks than cigarettes, potential health hazards clearly exist. This Update provides a brief summary of the health risks related to traditional North American smokeless tobacco and discusses the findings of a recent systematic review of the health effects of snus.

Download Update   Regional Differences in Smoking Behaviour: Tailoring Our Efforts (April)

Populations in which smoking behaviours remain high may be both geographically and socio-demographically distinct from other populations and thus require programs or policies tailored towards their needs. This update examines the relationship between regional socio-demographic characteristics and smoking behaviour in Ontario.

Download Update   The Performance Indicators Monitoring System (PIMS) (February)

In response to the demand for accountability and performance management information, OTRU is developing a performance reporting system. The Performance Indicators Monitoring system (PIMS) is designed for the ongoing collection, analysis and reporting of data related to Smoke-Free Ontario programs and projects.
